The Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute are polynodal institutions in the educational landscape of Mauritius. The foundation stone  of the  Institute was laid on 3rd June 1970 by the then Prime Minister of India, Shrimati Indira Gandhi and the then Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam. Both Institutes are dynamic and abreast of our times and function  effectively thanks to the schools and departments attached to them. In keeping with the trends of modern technology, this website will provide you with the information you require about the institutions.

About MGI

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute (Amendment) Act 2002 and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute  Act 2002 have provided for the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute (located in an idyllic setting at Ilot in the northern part of the country) to function under one Council and one Director-General. Various programmes ranging from Diploma courses, Degree and Post Graduate programmes are offered in Indian languages, Indian Philosophy, Indian Performing Arts, Chinese Studies, Mauritian Studies and Fine Arts.  Modules in Mauritian Studies cut across programmes to give students a better understanding of their society while currently promoting inter cultural values. In collaboration with the University of Mauritius, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute is providing the country with graduates in various oriental languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Urdu.

In accordance with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Act No.64 of 1970 and MGI Amended Act No. 47 of 2002, the objects of the Institute are:-

a) to establish, as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, a centre of studies of Indian culture and traditions.

b) to promote education and culture generally.

The Rabindranath Tagore Institute, an educational and cultural centre for the promotion of shared values, was inaugurated in December 2002 and operates today under the aegis of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. The attractive campus of the RTI has been established in memory of Rabindranath Tagore. The foundation stone of the RTI was laid on 12th March 2000 by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of India and Dr. the Hon. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Ex- Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius at Ilot, Pamplemousses.
