Secondary Schooling
Secondary education has been a
responsibility of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute from its very inception.
The MGI Secondary School started in 1975, with the late Dr. K.
Hazareesingh as Director of the Institute. Mr. B. Gopaul acted as
Officer-in-Charge of the Secondary School. In January 1975, the school
welcomed its first batch of students, who were selected on the basis of
Junior Scholarship results. The school has pioneered the teaching of
Oriental Languages, Music and Dance, Hinduism, Islamic Studies, Values and Growing Up Education and
Indian Culture.
The Gandhian Basic School, set-up in 1984 aimed at embodying the Gandhian sense of social justice as well as Gandhian principles of basic, adapted, practical education. The two constituent departments of the MGI, dedicated to secondary education, have made a difference, not only in imparting knowledge and skills but also promoting the overall development-affective and cultural- of the child.
At present, the total student population of the sector is about 4800, with about 330 Educators and 120 non-teaching staff.
The School's mission statement states that the secondary schools aim at being top performing institutions and will endeavour to provide quality education to its students, to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for both students and staff by promoting a learning environment, to develop the academic and non-academic potential of students, to provide for the cultural enrichment of students, to promote the learning, understanding and interaction of the oriental languages and culture and to act as a feeder for the tertiary sector of the MGI.
