Quality Assurance is gaining incremental importance in Higher Education. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute which is providing Higher Education to the student population in Mauritius is also required to provide high quality education and as such this institution has been called upon to set up a Quality Assurance Unit which will monitor quality in all the services it provides to the public and to develop a culture of quality in the Tertiary Sector. The QA Unit falls under the purview of the Director MGI.

 

The Quality Assurance Unit was set up in December 2007. Since November 2007, a coordinator for Quality Assurance was nominated to set up Quality Assurance mechanisms, assist academic departments to set up Quality Assurance procedures, prepare Self-Assessment Report and carry out other duties related to Quality Assurance.

The Quality Assurance Unit is also responsible for ensuring that good governance structures, procedures and processes are in place, for enquiring that all academic departments put in place departmental mechanisms for monitoring and sustaining the academic standards necessary for achieving objectives related to teaching and learning.

The QAU also helps the departments and the Institute to prepare for external scrutiny, to comment on the extent to which procedures in place in individual departments reflect best practices and to make proposals for improvement, as appropriate, to identify good practices in relation to the maintenance of academic standards and to make appropriate recommendations at the level of the Central Quality Assurance Committee and to carry out other duties related to Quality Assurance.

The QA Unit has published so far two publications namely: Self- Evaluation Report of MGI (2007) and Internal Academic Audit Report (April 2008).
